On Wednesday after school, Mrs. Kelley offered an 'eclipse' workshop for all who were interested in finding more about the Great American Eclipse. Mrs. Kelley shared how to view it, where best to view it and some cool strategies while viewing it. Take a look!
On Wednesday, students from African/Latino Studies and Modern World History were able to meet and learn from a delegation form Kenya, Maasai Chief, Joseph Ole Tipanko, and his delegation. Students learned about where they are from, their way of life, their culture and customs. To see more and learn more about this select the link below. Leaving Footprints.orgBulletin Board UpdateBy Eric Dagher For our Spanish Honors Society board, we decided to clear up the confusion that people may have between someone who is Hispanic and someone who is Latino or Latina. Part of our goal as Global Citizens in Spanish Honors Society is to inform others about both the beauty and intricacies in different Spanish cultures so that everyone can be more understanding of each other. We stated on the board that Hispanic refers to a person with ancestry from a country whose primary language is Spanish, while Latino and its variations refers to someone with origins from anywhere in Latin America (Mexico, South and Central America) and the Caribbean. We made sure to clear up this confusion through a venn-diagram, which includes each country of origin that would fit Latino, Hispanic, or both. It is understandable that people mix up the two groups because there is a lot of overlap. At the same time, it is important to know the difference since it demonstrates respect to people who have these different cultural backgrounds. Finally, our group highlighted Peru, which can be considered both Latino and Hispanic since Peru is both Spanish speaking and located in Latin America. Peru has a mix of indigenous and Spanish influences in its culture. Traditional music, dance, and festivals are key, and Peruvian cuisine is famous for its unique flavors. Machu Picchu, the Andes Mountains, and the Amazon Rainforest are all crucial parts of Peru with a strong connection to nature. By Sr. Vazquez Anna Mcadams, one of the SNHS members, was able to connect the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica with a local Instructor, Maryna from Salsa Wave Dance Studio. As a group, we decided to learn Bachata, a social dance from the Dominican Republic which is now danced all over the world, even in Ukraine where Maryna is from. We had a great time in the gymnasium. Many athletes who were passing by stopped to watch and realized how gifted and talented all of their friends are. Hopefully Maryna can visit our school again and perhaps work with an even bigger group of students. It was a blast! The LOLHS Select Singers have been invited to participate in a concert with the community chorus Cappella Cantorum on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at the Old Saybrook Congregational Church. Mr. Holt is the music director of Cappella Cantorum, and he is assisted by Rick Wyman.
Select Singers will perform two songs at the start of the concert (they have selected "Bring Me All Your Dreams" by Christopher Harris, as well as the perennial favorite "Java Jive" arranged by Kirby Shaw). They will then combine with Cappella Cantorum and a full orchestra to perform the major choral work "The Peacemakers" by Karl Jenkins. This 16-movement work extols peace and is dedicated to those who have lost their lives in armed conflict: in particular, innocent civilians. The texts used are derived from the words of our own messengers for peace: Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dalai Lama; and iconic and inspiring people including Mother Theresa, Anne Frank, Albert Schweitzer, Rumi, Bahá'ulláh, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Seraph of Sarov. The work also quotes from the Abrahamic religions including the Old and New Testament books of the Bible, the Qu'ran, and Judaism. English poets Shelley and Malory are heard, as well as contemporary poets Carol Barratt and Terry Waite CBE. Tickets are available online at cappellacantorum.org, by calling 860-532-0454, and at the door. Tickets are $30 for Adults and $15 for Students (age 18 or under). Children 6 & under can attend free with a ticketed adult. Personal check, cash, and credit card can be used online or at the door. If you have not yet joined THE SQUARE... please join. This will help build stronger communication between students, teachers, parents, administration. On Thursday, Chemistry students learned real life connections between chemistry and cooking. Students participated in a lab to demonstrate limiting reactants in chemistry by making pancakes! Students changed the amount of Baking Soda in the recipe and analyzed how the gas that is produced by this ingredient improves the quality of the pancake. On Thursday, March 28th, student council sponsored a school wide easter-egg hunt called "Where's Wygo". Mr. Wygonik's face was photoshopped onto a "Where's Waldo" body and hidden around the school. Lots of decoys were hidden to distract the students. Winners were able to redeem their "Wygo Waldo" for a prize! Congrats to many of our students who won! Jennifer Coffey from Webster Bank spoke to the Personal Finance classes this week. The students learned about the different types of bank accounts, how to open an account, banking fees, checking accounts, and fraud. Thank you Jennifer for your time and informative presentation!
Get ready to dance the night away at this year’s prom extravaganza! Here’s what you need to know:
Student Council ends March Madness with some more Wildcat fun! Students need to find the cut-outs of the above image of Mr. Wygonik that will be hidden all over the school. There are also many decoy hidden as well. Those who find Wygo, win a prize! GOOD LUCK WILDCATS!Chemistry students had some fun on Friday as they conducted a calorie lab. Each lab group collected data when burning a Frito chip, a Dorito, a Lays Potato Chip and a Cheeto to find out which one has the most calories.
On Wednesday, LOLHS' students participated in an all school assembly to with Ben Cort. Ben is from Colorado and has spent years traveling across the country and internationally making the public aware of the realities of modern marijuana and educating people to recognize the problems associated with these new strains of very powerful marijuana. Ben is passionate about recovery, and he is the founder of a sober athletic gym community in several states. He is an author, a TEDTalk speaker, and a trusted resource when national leaders need expert advice about marijuana issues. Ben spent the week travelling to several schools in Connecticut and we were lucky to have him here in Old Lyme.
On Saturday, LOLHS' Model UN Team participated in the ClarkMUN XIV. This is a high school Model United Nations conference hosted by the MUN at Clark team of Clark University. The conference aims to provide a platform for high school students to learn about international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations. Model UN is an excellent way for students to develop their leadership and public speaking skills and at ClarkMUN XIV, students had a unique experience that combines diplomacy, debate, and cultural exchange. This year's delegates included: Will Coppola, Anna Belle Coppola, Ryan Shapiro, Owen Shapiro, Ella Halsey; Beatrice Hunt, Cameron Russell and Zoe Brunza. A special shout out for Will Coppola
